Between 7 percent and 9 percent of global carbon emissions come from steelmaking, according to the World Steel Association. Carneiro says he’s found a better way by using electricity rather than coal to purify iron ore. Boston Metal has opened a pilot plant in Brazil to extract iron and other metals from slag left behind in tin refining. It’s the first step in a plan to transform the global steel industry.
