As a postdoctoral student at Worcester Polytechnic University, Gratz worked with Yan Wang to develop the nontoxic, water-based system for extracting lithium and other metals from old rechargeable batteries. The two men cofounded Ascend Elements, which has raised over $1 billion and is building a major recycling facility in Kentucky.
