After graduating from the University of Virginia, Hallen worked at a tech consulting firm, where he met his future business partner, Andrew Bialecki. While getting an MBA at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Hallen reconnected with Bialecki, and they launched Klaviyo to help ecommerce businesses manage customer data and interactions. Hallen left Klaviyo in 2016 but returned in 2021 as chief product officer, helping guide the company through an initial public offering that raised $345 million.
