BIOGRAPHY
Why a Tech Power Player? For driving innovation in equitable, human-centered applications of artificial intelligence.
Rana el Kaliouby is the founder of Affectiva, an MIT spinout that uses artificial intelligence to sense human emotion. Affectiva fed billions of frames of video to its algorithms, which then “learned” how to analyze facial expressions and translate them into data that can be used by media companies to create more effective advertising and by car manufacturers to gauge driver alertness. El Kaliouby raised more than $50 million to bring Affectiva’s technology to life before the company was acquired in 2021 for $73.5 million by the Swedish firm Smart Eye, where el Kaliouby is deputy CEO. She is the author of “Girl Decoded: A Scientist’s Quest to Reclaim Our Humanity by Bringing Emotional Intelligence to Technology,” a memoir about her experience as an Egyptian-American scientist working in the field of emotional AI. El Kaliouby received a BS and an MS in computer science from The American University in Cairo, as well as a PhD in computer science from the University of Cambridge, in England.
