The 2020 presidential election season is now upon us, and we’re keeping track of where all the active candidates stand: Who’s running, who isn’t running, and who has dropped out. We’ll be updating this list as candidates declare their intentions or drop out, so keep checking in.

Bloomberg, a Medford native, created a media company and was elected New York City mayor – once as a Republican and again as an independent. He is now a registered Democrat.

US Senator from New Jersey

He has served in the US Senate since 2013, and his rise to become mayor of Newark was depicted in a movie.

Governor of Montana

Visited New Hampshire

Bullock served as Montana’s attorney general before being elected governor twice.

Former South Bend (Ind.) Mayor

Buttigieg is an Afghanistan war veteran, Rhodes scholar, and Harvard graduate. He’s the first openly gay Democratic presidential candidate.

Former HUD Secretary

Castro served as Secretary of Housing and Economic Development under President Obama following about five years as mayor of San Antonio, Texas. His twin brother, Joaquin, is also a politician.

de Blasio, who grew up in Cambridge, has been reelected twice as New York City mayor.

Tulsi Gabbard, 38

US Representative from Hawaii

Visited New Hampshire

Gabbard is an Iraq war veteran and was the youngest woman elected to a state legislature when she won a House seat in Hawaii in 2002. She represents the state’s Second Congressional District.

Kirsten Gillibrand, 53

US Senator from New York

Visited New Hampshire

Gillibrand represented New York’s 20th Congressional District before being appointed to HIllary Clinton’s Senate seat in 2009. She won a special election for the seat and then was re-elected in 2012 and 2018.

Harris was elected to the Senate in 2017. She began her elected career as district attorney in San Francisco and was later attorney general for the state of California.

Patrick is a former Massachusetts governor who was a political newcomer when he mounted a 2005 bid for the corner office. He is a Harvard Law grad who worked in the Clinton administration and as a corporate attorney before entering politics.
