How New England athletes fared in the Paris Olympics
From Northampton’s Gabby Thomas to viral sensation Stephen Nedoroscik, it was a successful Games for the region.
As the Paris Olympics have come and gone, we kept an eye on the local representation at the 2024 Games.
There was plenty of New England interest in France, and the region had an impressive trip to the Olympics. Born-and-bred Bay Staters, local college grads, and Celtics champions came home with hardware.
From triple gold medalists (Gabby Thomas) to history makers (Lauren Scruggs) to viral sensations (Stephen Nedoroscik and Ilona Maher), here’s how the area’s best fared at an unforgettable Games.

New England tie: Born in Massachusetts
Olympic appearances: 2020
Born in Massachusetts and raised in Mexico City, Mucino Fernandez took up archery at age 9 and returned to the United States to pursue her career. She was part of the US women's team that finished in the top five at last year's world championships, but left Paris without a medal as the American women finished ninth in the team competition and Mucino Fernandez came 33rd in the individual event. New England tie: Grew up North Andover
It was a very successful trip to Paris for Remati, the Australian-born Andover native who got her start in artistic swimming at the Andover/North Andover YMCA before becoming a multiple-time national champion at Ohio State. Remati was part of the US team that won a silver medal, the country’s first Olympic hardware in the team event since 2004. Team USA bio

Not a bad summer for Jrue Holiday, who joined Scottie Pippen as the only players in history to win an NBA title and Olympic gold in the same year on two separate occasions. Holiday played a significant role for Team USA, starting three of the six games and averaging 7.6 points and 3.6 assists in 18.8 minutes per game as the Americans won a fifth gold medal. Team USA bio

New England tie: Grew up in Connecticut
Olympic appearances: 2020
The New London, Conn., native played in her second Olympics representing Puerto Rico, the place of her parents' birth. Pagan had 9 points on 4 of 5 shooting as Puerto Rico lost by just a point to Spain in the second group game. Puerto Rico bowed out after losing all three group games.

Jayson Tatum

It was a strange trip to Paris for Tatum, who looked to complete a special summer — an NBA title, a record-breaking contract, the cover of his favorite video game — with Olympic gold. He got that gold in the end, but perhaps not in the way he wanted as he struggled to carve out a role in Steve Kerr’s rotation. New England tie: Drafted by the Celtics in 2019
A New Haven native and a Celtics draft pick back in 2019, Waters suited up for Puerto Rico, where his mother is from and where he now plays professionally. Waters poured in 18 points in the opener in a loss to South Sudan, and Puerto Rico exited the tournament early after going 0-3 in the group stage.

New England tie: Plays for the Celtics
A late addition to Team USA, the Celtics’ do-it-all guard carved out a nice role with the second unit in Paris and averaged 18 minutes per game over the first four contests. After a difficult outing against Serbia in the semifinals, White didn’t see the floor in the gold-medal match against France, but will come back to Boston with a gold medal to add to his NBA title. Few locals had a better time in Paris than Harvard grad Kristen Faulkner, who stunned the field to win a historic gold medal in the women’s road race before winning a second gold in the women’s team pursuit on the track. Olympic appearances: 2016, 2020
The Dover native, a 2021 silver medalist in the 10-meter synchro and eight-time national champion, returned for a third trip to the Olympics. Paris was less successful than Tokyo for Parratto, who along with partner Delaney Schnell had to settle for sixth in the 10-meter synchro this time around. Olympic appearances: 2016, 2020
Paris was another disappointing Olympic trip for Dershwitz, as the reigning men’s sabre world champion lost his first bout and exited in the round of 32 — even earlier than his disappointing showing in Tokyo. The Dover native and Harvard grad couldn’t lead an all-Harvard squad to a team medal either, as the Americans lost in the first round to Iran and had to settle for seventh. One of two Harvard fencers competing for Canada, the 19-year-old Guo comfortably won her first bout in the women’s individual foil before losing to Harvard teammate — and eventual silver medalist — Lauren Scruggs in the round of 16. The reigning junior (under-20) world champion in the individual foil, Guo was also part of a Canada squad that missed out on a bronze medal by just a single touch to Japan in the team event. The 18-year-old from Beijing was the only member of the four-man sabre squad who hasn't graduated from Harvard — because he doesn't start school in Cambridge until this fall. The two-time junior world sabre champion bowed out early in the individual sabre with a round of 32 defeat to South Korea’s Park Sang-won, and was part of the US team that came seventh in the team competition. A two-time Ivy League champion at Harvard, Saron was the only American man to win an individual bout in the sabre with a round of 32 upset over former world silver medalist Maxime Pianfetti. One of the breakout stars of the Games, Scruggs made an incredible run to the women’s foil final before falling to fellow American Lee Kiefer, picking up a historic silver medal in the process. Kiefer and Scruggs joined forces for the team event, helping deliver the first team Olympic gold in American history to cap off a spectacular summer for the 21-year-old rising senior at Harvard. She also competed in the team event, where the US had a tough draw with eventual gold medalists South Korea in the first round; the Americans won both matches in the lower bracket to finish fifth. A Duxbury native and two-time All-Patriot League first teamer at Boston University, Hammel featured regularly for Team USA in Paris. After failing to qualify in 2021, the Americans never really got off the ground this time around, winning just one of their five games and coming fifth in Group B to miss out on the knockout stages. Perhaps the most viral of the local Olympians, Nedoroscik became a national star with his electric pommel horse routine to help the US men to its first gymnastics team medal since 2008. His performance, glasses, and Rubik’s Cube spawned endless memes and TikToks of America’s new favorite gymnast. Stoughton’s Richard came into these games as one of the rising stars of men’s gymnastics and he delivered in the team competition as the American men earned their first medal since 2008. She sailed in the women's dinghy event off the coast of Marseille, qualifying for the medal race and coming sixth, which was enough for a ninth-place finish in the final results out of 43 athletes. Naeher, who calls Stratford, Conn., home, once again backstopped the US women's soccer team at another Olympics. Tertsch was a standout track and field athlete at Harvard, where she won three individual Ivy League titles for the Crimson. She competed for Germany in the triathlon and put on a great showing in Paris, first finishing in the top 10 in the individual race in her Olympic debut despite a crash early in the bike section. She bounced back to help win gold with Germany in the mixed triathlon relay.
